AAFC partners up with Evologic on commercialisation of biological glyphosate replacement 17.05.2020

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) has developed the Phoma macrostoma technology as a biological alternative to conventional herbicide use. In 2020, AAFC invited potential industry partners by a Request for Proposals to commercialize this technology. Evologic Technologies submitted a proposal based on their proposed proprietary and highly innovative production technology, which features a promising opportunity for large scale market introduction of the biological herbicide. Evologic Technologies is pleased to announce that their proposal was successful. To date, Evologic and AAFC are discussing the details of transfer of the Phoma macrostoma technology.

Technology

Despite the numerous lucrative phytochemicals, to this date, the production of hairy roots has not exceeded 70 L. Our novel production technology allows scaling hairy root production to several m3. Our bioreactor design allows, for the first time the production of hairy roots at industrial scale.

Product

Besides secondary metabolites, hairy roots also allow the production of symbiotic fungi. These symbiotic fungi are called Mycorrhiza and have been shown to decrease the need for chemical fertilizers and even water. To date, mycorrhiza products are simply too expensive and vary in quality. Our novel production process for hairy roots allows producing mycorrhiza at economically feasible costs for the first time. to produce mycorrhiza at economically feasible costs.
